Starting Point: Strahov Monastery

Address: Strahovské nádvoří 126/8, 118 00 Praha 1-Hradčany

On the first day of May, when the air is filled with the scent of blooming trees and the chime of spring breezes, you will set off on a journey that connects the spiritual depth of an ancient monastery with the lively bustle of a modern beer festival. This will not just be a tour—it will be a day full of flavors, stories, smiles, and discoveries.

Your morning will begin at the Strahov Monastery, where you will stroll through grounds that are more than eight hundred years old. White facades, historic gates, and the quiet of an inner courtyard will set the tone. Here, you will learn that the monks not only prayed but also brewed beer—a craft considered almost sacred. You may be surprised to hear that as early as the 13th century, amber beer was fermenting in the monastery’s cellars, enjoyed by locals and pilgrims alike.

You will walk alongside the walls of the ancient library, peek into a small inner garden, and step out onto a panoramic terrace with breathtaking views of springtime Prague—rooftops, domes, spires, the river, bridges, and green hills. This will be a perfect moment to take photos—the view from here is considered one of the most beautiful in the city.

After your stroll, a short drive will take you through Prague’s western districts—through parks, shaded streets, past villas and fountains. Soon you will arrive at the Břevnov Monastery, the oldest monastery in the Czech Republic. Amid cobbled paths, green lawns, and imposing facades, one of the country’s most atmospheric beer festivals will unfold—Prvni Pivni Maj.

Your guide will tell you about the history of the site. You will learn that Břevnov was founded in 993 and is considered the first monastery in the Czech lands. Beer was brewed here for centuries, and this tradition is still alive today. The local brewery operates in the spirit of ancient craftsmanship, blending monastic recipes with modern techniques.

On the grassy grounds, a true festival of flavor will await: dozens of tents, beer stands, food stalls, stages, and relaxation zones. You will walk among rows of microbreweries, each offering something unique—floral lagers, coffee-noted stouts, unfiltered pale ales, cherry ales, and caramel porters. Some brews will be so rare that you’ll only be able to taste them here.

More than twenty brewers from across the Czech Republic will gather at the festival. Around eighty different types of beer will be on offer—from classic lagers to experimental fruit and herbal varieties. Each brewery will bring its best, and many of the drinks will be available exclusively on this day.

The brewers will be happy to share stories of how certain recipes came to life, which hops they use, and why they brew their beer the way they do. For every glass, you’ll find the perfect snack—smoked sausage sandwiches, hot cheese, potato chips, homemade sausages, or crispy trdelník for dessert.

Music will play all around: Czech bands performing rock, folk, and blues will take the stage. People will laugh, take photos, sit on the grass, raise their glasses, and make new friends. For children, organizers will prepare carousels, inflatable slides, sweets, and small workshops. The atmosphere will be relaxed and very welcoming.

After the guided part of the tour, you’ll have free time. You can choose what suits you best—try new beers, chat with brewers, relax in the shade of the trees, or enjoy the live music. The event will allow you to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a true Czech beer celebration at your own pace.

You will not only sample beer but also learn more about Czech brewing culture, traditions, beer styles, and history. All of this will happen against the backdrop of ancient monastery walls, lending the celebration a special, almost fairytale-like charm. As evening approaches, fairy lights will glow, the stage will come alive with color, music will grow livelier, and the golden tones of the sunset will bathe the monastery’s walls.

With a glass in hand, you will feel spring overflowing from within. When the day comes to an end, you will take with you not just photos and souvenirs but a real sense of Czech festivity—lively, flavorful, heartfelt. This excursion will offer you the chance to live a day filled with impressions, to discover more about Prague, about beer, and about the people who craft it. It will be a day you’ll want to relive.

Important! Recommendations for a comfortable journey :

To make a walk in Prague a pleasure, choose comfortable shoes and clothes according to the weather. The city’s cobblestones and hilly streets require comfortable footwear, and the changeable weather means being prepared for surprises. It’s worth taking warm clothes in the cooler seasons, and a hat and sunglasses in summer. Don’t forget an umbrella – it can start raining unexpectedly in Prague.

The tour includes a long walk, but it will be comfortable even for unprepared travellers. It is only important to take care of a small rucksack for personal belongings and a bottle of water in advance.

Lunch is not included, but the guide will be happy to recommend tried and tested restaurants with traditional Czech cuisine where you can enjoy the best local specialities.

With these simple tips, the walk will be even more enjoyable and your Prague experience will be unforgettable!
