Address: U Prašného mostu 51/6, 118 00 Praha 1-Hradčany
Our journey begins at the Lion’s Court, where real lions once roared, presented to Czech kings as a sign of power and authority. These walls remember the times when Prague Castle was not just a royal residence, but a real fortress, a symbol of impregnability and grandeur. We will walk through its palaces and squares, marvelling at the architecture, in which different eras are intertwined – from Romanesque architecture to majestic Gothic and opulent Baroque. Prague Castle is the place where Czech history was made, where the voices of kings were heard, and where secret counsellors schemed to change the course of events. We will stop at St Vitus Cathedral, which, like a guardian of time, towers over the Castle with its Gothic spires. Its facades decorated with fantastic gargoyles, the colourful stained glass windows that play in the sunlight and the legends of the saints resting in its crypts make it seem as if we are looking at a living chronicle of the country.
Leaving Prague Castle, we will arrive at the Observation Deck, which offers one of the most picturesque views of Prague. From here, the city appears in all its glory – red tiled roofs, winding streets, bridges spanning the Vltava River, spires of ancient temples reaching into the sky. This view inspired artists and poets, and monarchs and nobles liked to stop here to observe the life of the capital from the heights of Hrad. We will see a magnificent panorama of Malá Strana, a neighbourhood that for centuries was home to the nobility and aristocracy and has now become one of the most romantic corners of Prague.
Going downhill, we will find ourselves on Nerudova Street, one of the oldest and most atmospheric streets in Prague. In the past it was the road used by royal processions to Hrad, but today it is home to old palaces and mansions, each of which hides its own history. Unlike other streets in the city, the houses here were not numbered – they were recognised by unique signs. We will see the House of Two Suns, where the Czech poet Jan Neruda lived, the House of Three Violins, which belonged to a family of musical instrument masters, and the House of the Golden Horseshoe, which is known for the wealth found within its walls. This street is a true chronicle of Prague’s aristocratic life, where every balcony and every window ledge holds memories of its former owners.
Our path will lead us to Malostranská Square, an architectural gem of the city surrounded by magnificent palaces and cathedrals. In the centre stands the column of the Holy Trinity, and all around are majestic buildings that once belonged to wealthy nobles and foreign embassies. There is a special atmosphere here – measured but full of grandeur. The greatest jewel of the square is the Church of St Nicholas, a Baroque masterpiece that amazes with its luxurious interiors painted by the best masters of its time. Mozart’s music once played under its dome, and fugitives hiding from justice hid under its vaults.
Leaving the noise of the square behind, we will head to one of the cosiest corners of Prague – Prague Venice. This neighbourhood, located along the Čertovka Canal, gets its name from the picturesque houses standing right by the water and the charming bridges connecting the banks. Here, among the reflections in the water and the old facades, you can feel yourself in a completely different era. Our route will take us past the Church of the Virgin Mary above the Chain, which has belonged to the Knights of Malta since the 13th century. Its massive walls, austere architecture and ancient legends make it one of the most mysterious places in the city.
We will approach the John Lennon Wall, a symbol of freedom and peace that appeared in the 1980s when young Czechs started leaving messages here against the regime. Today this wall is covered with colourful graffiti, lines of songs and wishes in different languages of the world. This place has become a real attraction, attracting travellers from all over the world.
Next to us is the Velkopřevo Mill, one of the oldest in the city. Its blades still creak, driven by the current of the river, and a symbolic guardian, the bronze Waterman, sits on the railing. The devil, quietly murmuring along the embankments, hides many stories related to the lives of artisans, water millers and residents who believed in legends about the spirits of the river.
We finish our walk at the Malostranskie Bridge Towers, guarding the entrance to the Charles Bridge. These massive structures were once part of the city’s defence system and have seen more than one war and siege. Today, it offers a stunning view of the Vltava River, the majestic silhouette of Prague Castle and the numerous bridges connecting the banks of the old city. This is a place where history meets modernity, where every stone remembers the footsteps of kings and every alley hides memories of the past.
This walk will be a real immersion into the atmosphere of old Prague, where the grandeur of the monarchs is replaced by the elegance of the aristocracy, where every building tells its own story and narrow alleys preserve the traces of bygone centuries. We will walk through places that have inspired poets and artists, look into corners that have not yet been touched by time and enjoy views that will remain in your memory forever.
