This tour offers a unique opportunity to touch history and feel the spirit of sanctity and grandeur with which Vysehrad is filled.
Starting Point: Tabor Gate
Address: Vyšehrad, V Pevnosti, 128 00 Praha 2-Vyšehrad
Our journey will start at the Tabor Gate, the monumental entrance to the Visegrad Fortress. This gate was once part of a powerful medieval defence system protecting the approaches to the ancient fortification. It was named in honour of the Hussite town of Tabor, as it was the gate through which the rebels could pass during their campaigns in the 15th century. Here, at the massive walls, we will plunge into the atmosphere of the mysterious past, find out why Vysehrad remained impregnable for centuries and what unusual stories are connected with this place.
Moving on, we will find ourselves at Leopold’s Gate, built in the 17th century on the orders of Emperor Leopold I. This gate symbolised a new era for Vysehrad – from a medieval stronghold it turned into a powerful Baroque fortress. The majestic bastions, moat and massive stone walls will remind us of the time when the fortress defended Prague from enemy armies. You will learn what secret tunnels are hidden behind these walls, what legends are connected with the disappearance of treasures, and you will be able to take stunning photos against the backdrop of one of the most beautiful fortress structures in the city.
After passing through the gate, we will find ourselves in front of St Martin’s Rotunda, one of the oldest surviving churches in Prague. Built back in the 10th century, it has survived wars, fires and many rebuildings, but still retains a unique atmosphere of antiquity. The walls of this rotunda are said to have a special energy, and one legend says that secret passages leading to the treasures of Czech princes are hidden underground.
As we continue our journey, we will ascend to the Vysehrad Chapter House, where for centuries the canons who kept ancient manuscripts and relics lived. Here, in the shadow of the ancient walls, we will talk about medieval intrigues and secrets of Vysehrad, about the legendary rulers of Bohemia and why Vysehrad was considered a sacred place full of mysticism and riddles.
On our way we will see the mysterious Devil’s Column – three stone fragments standing directly on the grass. Legend has it that a monk from Vysehrad once bet the devil that he would finish the service faster than an unclean spirit could get to Rome and back. To win, the devil threw a column from heaven, but it fell without reaching its destination. You will learn unusual facts about why this stone was here and what secret symbols are hidden in it.
Then you will see the Basilica of St Peter and St Paul, a majestic building with two pointed towers visible from afar. This cathedral, built in neo-Gothic style, impresses not only with its architecture but also with its rich interior decoration. The relics of Czech saints are kept here, and stained glass windows and frescoes depict scenes from biblical stories and old legends. We will talk about the secret signs hidden in the ornaments, the fascinating events associated with this place, and why the basilica has become an important religious centre in Bohemia.
Moving on, we will come to the Vyšehrad Cemetery, one of the most famous places in Prague. Here are buried prominent Czech artists, writers, composers and politicians. We will walk among beautiful tombstones decorated with sculptures and carvings, talk about great people whose destinies are inextricably linked with the Czech Republic, and see the grave of the legendary composer Bedřich Smetana, author of the famous ‘Moldavia’.
Next to the cemetery is Slavin – a majestic memorial where outstanding Czech figures are buried. This place is special: it was created to immortalise the memory of the most important personalities of the Czech Republic. We will learn unusual stories about famous Czech writers, artists and scientists whose names are forever inscribed in the country’s history.
Our walk will be rounded off with a visit to the Vysehrad casemates – ancient dungeons that hold many secrets. Here in the dark corridors you can feel like a real explorer and touch the history of the fortress defences. You will learn what legends and mystical stories are associated with these places, how soldiers took shelter here during sieges, and why the original bas-reliefs from Charles Bridge are hidden in these dungeons.
After the tour you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Vltava River and Prague, take unforgettable photos and once again feel the spirit of this legendary place. Vysehrad is not just a fortress, it is a place where history comes alive, where legends intertwine with reality and ancient walls keep the secrets of centuries.
